After Mexican President Benito Juarez angered European creditors by halting interest payments, France supported the overthrow of the Mexican government and installed Maximilian Ferdinand as a monarch. The US government passed a resolution opposing Maximilian in April 1864. Published in March 1865, this cartoon is using pies to represent different North American possessions. Napoleon III, the French monarch at the time, is shown trying to run away with the Mexican pie. Meanwhile Jefferson Davis is pointing at the Southern section of the United States pie. Uncle Sam is restraining Napoleon III and guarding the US pie in accordance with the Monroe Doctrine, introduced in 1823 by James Monroe in an effort to defend American lands from further European intervention. With the end of the Civil War in sight, the US was preparing to take military action against Maximilian. Following the war, increased American troop presence at the Mexican border as well as a naval blockade helped to forward the movement that ousted Maximilian and restored the presidency of Juarez."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Unknown"]},{"label":"Alternate Title","value":"Uncle Sam--\"Ah! would you?
