Published in July 1861, the Confederacy was confident in their belief that Great Britain depended on Southern cotton to fuel their nation's textile industry. As a result there was a Southern movement to withhold the export of cotton as a further coercive measure for Britain and other European nations to lend support to the Confederacy. While cotton originally seemed to be a strong bargaining piece given the South's majority share in cotton cultivation, excess stores in Britain and increased cotton cultivation in places like Egypt and India left the South with large stores of unsold cotton and without European support and recognition."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Newman, William"]},{"label":"Alternate Title","value":"Vide Correspondence of W.
