Before he left with the army on July 6, Dr. Letterman ordered 106 surgeons to remain behind with the 20, 000 Union and Confederate wounded. Many of the wounded were soon moved to other hospitals or discharged from the service. Those who remained were collected into a tent hospital, known as Camp Letterman, located just east of the town along the York Road.
