In 1785 he began to serve under Louis XVI. Although he remained distracted by affairs in Corsica, he earned the title of Captain in the French Army and commanded the artillery at the siege of the Port of Toulon from the British in 1793, which brought him national recognition and a promotion to brigadier general. In 1795 Napoleon was appointed commander of the Army of the Interior after defending the Tuileries from 13 Vendémiaire. He married Josephine de Beauharnais on March 9, 1796 before taking the command of the Army of Italy in Nice. Soon after taking command he issued an invasion of Italy, the result of which was the forced signing of the Treaty of Campofornio by the Austrians on October 17, 1797 giving France control of Italy. Receiving a new command in Egypt, Napoleon set sail with 35,000 men in March 1798. The result was a French reorganization of the Egyptian government as well as an introduction of several social welfare needs but an unsuccessful military venture. Returning to France in 1799, Napoleon overthrew the French government along with Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès, Joseph Fouché, and Charles Maurice de Talleyrand on November 9 and 10, 1799 claiming the throne for himself. Napoleon immediately worked to bring peace to France internally by ending the Civil War in Vendée as well as externally by finally ending the war with England and Austria and restoring the friendly relationship between Italy and France all accomblished by 1802. He also set up the Napoleonic Code as the new French legal system. While enjoying popularity among the nobles the average man noticed no great difference during Napoleons reign, especially when the war with England began again in 1803. By 1806 Napoleon had conquored or at least stunned most of the European continent, England excluded. Beginning in 1805 with a failed blockade against all British goods, unsupported by Spain, the Papacy and Russia; the Penninsular War with Great Britain; and the loss of 500,000 French troops in the Russian Campaign of 1812, the Napoleonic Empire began to fall apart. A marriage to Marie Louise, the daughter of the Austrian emperor in 1810 failed to secure a peace with Austria, followed by Napoleon defeat at the Battle of Nations in 1813. On April 14, 1814 Napoleon abdicated the throne to his son Napoleon II, who was three-years-old. The allies did not recognize Napoleon II's right to rule and Louis XVIII was given the throne. Napoleon I was exiled to the island of Elba. However, after the breakdown of peace talks at the Congress of Vienna, Napoleon returned to Paris and reinstated himself. On June 18, 1815, Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo by the British and Prussian armies and sent to the island of St. Helena where he died of cancer in 1821."},{"label":"Title","value":"Napoleon I, Emperor of the French"},{"label":"Part of","value":["Nineteenth Century Notables GettDigital Collection"]},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p126301coll1/id/24"}],"description":"Napoleon I, Emperor of the French","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/c552548a-31a7-404e-9c39-13ba8ea8ae7a/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Napoleon I, Emperor of the French","height":1147,"width":754,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/c552548a-31a7-404e-9c39-13ba8ea8ae7a/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/c552548a-31a7-404e-9c39-13ba8ea8ae7a","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1147,"width":754},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/c552548a-31a7-404e-9c39-13ba8ea8ae7a/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/c552548a-31a7-404e-9c39-13ba8ea8ae7a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/c552548a-31a7-404e-9c39-13ba8ea8ae7a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
