In November 1861 Union Captain Charles Wilkes intercepted a British ship and arrested two Confederate diplomats bound for Great Britain, James Mason and John Slidell. Here the two are shown being apprended, with John Slidell carrying a bag labeled \"F.F.V. Chivalry\" (First Families of Virginia). This is implying that the two diplomats were planning on engaging in bribes and bargaining with \"Bull, Craupaud & Co.\" meaning the British and French. After a negative Britsh response to the captures, a resolution was agreed upon soon after freeing both Mason and Slidell."},{"label":"Alternate Title","value":"POLICEMAN WILKES, noticing by the last Number of Harper's Weekly, that the well-known Rogues, MASON and SLIDELL, were about to Pawn some their late Emperor's Property at Messrs.
