It was never an insignia in ancient sacrificial ceremonies. The squirrel shortly appeared in the Song paintings and porcelains. It was not until the end of the 18th century when the motif of the rodent and the vine started to adorn jade carvings and porcelain. This unusual design depicting a squirrel nibbling a grapevine is probably a good example of Western influence on Chinese art. The openwork carving has the carving style of the late Qing period with its minute details and a flamboyant character with a close resemblance in style to European sculpture of the same period. The quality of workmanship is obvious in this object. The surface is smooth and excellently polished with a velvety quality, and no hard corners or protrusions. There is an exquisite delicacy of execution, softness of the incised lines, and elegance in every element of life-like details. The composition and style of execution were probably inspired from Western paintings. Jade carvings of this period were at their zenith of decorative perfection. However, the inevitable influence from the West also caused an unreal and non-Chinese character, due to the rapid changes in carving techniques. During this time, the economic expansion led to a vogue for Chinese decorative arts. Important translucent carvings of purer types of jade had solely a decorative purpose. Jade lost its spiritual power and became a material luxury, indicative of secular power and social status. They were produced in large quantities for two major art patrons: the Imperial court and the trading industry."},{"label":"Title","value":"Ornament with \"squirrel and vine\" design"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
