The shape of this large flask is according to the Ming model, however it contains some revisions. The flattened, round belly of this large flask contains two medallions in which are depicted Guan Yu, the commander of the Han Kingdom, the the fighting Cao Cao, the founder of the Wei Kingdom, from The Three Kingdoms (220-280). These are displayed against a background of floral scrolls and coiling vines. Both figures are riding a horse. On one side Cao Cao is about to shoot an arrow while Guan Yu is about to draw his broadsword. Both figures are surrounded by their warriors. On the other side they are thrusting their spears into the other side, and only Guan Yu is illustrated among his warriors. As a matter of fact, the representation of the battle scenes here is odd because it does not seem to have been adapted from the Romance of The Three Kingdoms (Sanguo yanyi). Three registers of design are represented on the neck. On top is a band of hui wen (key fret pattern). Below is a band of evenly spaced lei wen (thunder patterns) on a blue background. The following and main register depicts floral scrolls and coiling vines that continue onto the belly. A band of stylized lotus petals with plum blossom inside is on the bottom of the large flask. Underneath there are continuous leafy patterns. The interior of this vessel is white glazed and plainly decorated. The inner walls and bottom of the splayed footring are unglazed, exposing the white body. This blue and white flask is quite large in size, which is rarely seen in Chinese porcelains. As mentioned above, the illustration of the battle scenes on this piece is unusual because it does not seem to follow any story from the Romance of The Three Kingdoms (Sanguo yanyi). Further, portrayal of all the figures appears quite offhand. Lastly, a considerable number of defects can be seen in the underglaze blue. As such, it is highly likely that this piece was made recently, approximately from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century."},{"label":"Title","value":"Large blue and white flask with monster-shaped handles"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
