On the front side the relief detail is of a monastery or imperial gardens with many active figures. One will notice that this is the front because the box is convex on this side and concave on the reverse. There are willow and mulberry trees, which are symbols in Chinese art. Willow symbolizes protection, and the mulberry tree symbolizes home comforts and industry. The entire scene is placed into a cross shape. This box probably belonged to a Christian foreign diplomat or a recent Chinese convert to Christianity. On the reverse side we see a similar scene carved. There are many bustling monks (probably) with architecture and mulberry trees in the scene as well. The entire scene on this side seems to almost take the shape of a whale. The box has a removable top.
