Langyao red is a type of high-fired red glaze from the Jingdezhen kilns at the time in which they were supervised by Lang Tingji, the Governor of Jiangxi from 1705 to 1712, during the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty. Copies of vessels with the Langyao-red glaze were made during the successive Yongzheng and Qianlong reigns. A considerable number of replicas were also produced in the Republican period (1911-1949). The gall-bladder bottle was firstly made in the Jun, Ge and Yaozhou kilns during the Song dynasty. While copying the Song wares, potters in Jingdezhen in the Qing dynasty also developed new varieties of the vase by glazing them in Langyao red, coral red (shan hu hong), sky blue (tian lan), peacock blue (kong que lan), and robin's egg (lu jun). The production reached its height during the Qianlong reign. The upper neck of this bottle appears to be millet yellow with a thin layer of the Langyao red glaze. Overall the Langyao red glazing is exceedingly smooth. The mouthrim, the interior of this bottle, and the base of the footring are in a grayish white glaze. The exterior of this vessel is finely crackled while its interior and the base of the footring bear large quantities of small grey iron-colored crackles. The object is in excellent condition except that part of the footring has been broken. The glazing and making of this gall-bladder shaped bottle appear elegant and superb. It is after the Qianlong model and the Langyao red glaze on it appears dark and lustrous, an indication of such vessels that were produced during the earlier stage. Therefore, this piece is attributed to the Qianlong period."},{"label":"Title","value":"Langyao red-glazed (lang yao hong) gall-bladder bottle (danping)"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
