The bills on the wall represent his dreams, all tying to Confederate defeats militarily and politically. One states, \"Gordon executed,\" in reference to the execution of Nathaniel Gordon in Februrary 1862 for slave trading. Not all of the signs depict events that have occurred though, some are merely conjecture. The sign labelled \"Memphis\" is covered by \"Buell,\" as Union forces under Don Carlos Buell were closing in on the Tennessee city, which he would capture in June. On the other hand, the sign of \"Manassas, Winchester\" covered by \"Banks,\" refers to Nathaniel Banks efforts to threaten the Shenandoah Valley. Here he would later be engaged by Thomas \"Stonewall\" Jackson,\" whose smaller force outmanuevered and outfought Banks as well as two other Union armies."},{"label":"Date","value":"D:22 M:03 Y:1862"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"March 22, 1862"},{"label":"Title","value":"THE HAND-WRITING ON THE WALLS AT RICHMOND; or, The Dream of the Rebel Bill-Poster, JEFF DAVIS"},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p4016coll2/id/1726"}],"description":"THE HAND-WRITING ON THE WALLS AT RICHMOND; or, The Dream of the Rebel Bill-Poster, JEFF DAVIS","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b56ce7e6-a0dc-4ca5-897a-b545bf73e9c7/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"THE HAND-WRITING ON THE WALLS AT RICHMOND; or, The Dream of the Rebel Bill-Poster, JEFF DAVIS","height":2724,"width":1866,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b56ce7e6-a0dc-4ca5-897a-b545bf73e9c7/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b56ce7e6-a0dc-4ca5-897a-b545bf73e9c7","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2724,"width":1866},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b56ce7e6-a0dc-4ca5-897a-b545bf73e9c7/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b56ce7e6-a0dc-4ca5-897a-b545bf73e9c7/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b56ce7e6-a0dc-4ca5-897a-b545bf73e9c7/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
