The Ottomans built fortresses along the straits to hold back invading Byzantium and control the waterways at the narrowest part of the straight. The fortress eventually lost its strategic importance and the structure was used, over time, for storage and as a prison. The photograph shows the three large towers (kule) and fortress walls with small watchtowers. Also visible is a neighborhood of Constantinople that developed inside the abandoned fortress during the 19th century. On the opposite, Asian side of the Bosphorus, is the Anadoluhisarı or Anadolu Hisari (not pictured), a similar fortress built by Sultan Bayezid I around 1394."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Sebah & Joaillier"]},{"label":"Title","value":"Bosphore, Chateaux d' Europe.
