She was the daughter of King James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise a French Catholic. King James V died a week after the birth of Mary, leaving her as Queen of the Scots, with her mother reigning as Regent. In 1548 an agreement was reached for Mary to marry the Dauphin of France, Francois II, this agreement resulted in a French alliance with and influence over Scotland. In 1558, Mary Tudor, Queen of England died and Mary, Queen of Scots as great-granddaughter of Henry VII, laid claim to the English throne because Elizabeth I was declared illegitimate. However, Elizabeth I became Queen of England with Mary and the Dauphin maintaining the royal titles of England and Ireland, which was officially revoked with the Treaty of Edinborough in 1860. In 1560 the Dauphin died and Catherine de Médicis assumed power. In 1561 Mary headed back to Scotland to reassert her power there, this was seen as a direct threat to Elizabeth I. In 1565 Mary remarried Henry, Lord Darnley, the next heir to the English throne after Mary, in effect strengthening her claim to the throne. Lord Darnley and Mary had very different political views and followers yet they managed to conceive one son, in 1566. He later became James VI of Scotland and James I of England. In 1567 Darnley was murdered, an act which historians link to Mary. Later in 1567 she married the Earl of Bothwell, the man who it is believed helped her murder Darnley. After this marriage Mary lost all support in Scotland and Civil Wars ensued forcing her to abdicate her throne to her son. In May 1568 she escaped to England. Mary's exile in England left Elizabeth in a difficult situation because Mary was a pretender to the English throne as well as a Catholic threat who could find refuge in Spain and threaten Protestant England. Mary however remained in England but under captivity, where she became involved in Catholic plots to take over the English throne. In 1586 a letter was discovered in which Mary gave her assent to the assassination of Elizabeth. Mary was found guilty and sentenced to death. She was executed on February 8, 1587."},{"label":"Creator","value":["W. G.
