It was filthy. The thinness of the ivory is remarkable and makes the detail in the carving more impressive. Kramer tried to save the original silk by attaching his own silk cords to take on the burden; you can see the modern silk between the gold-plated finial and the original yellow silk. The silk ropes are tied in the classical Chinese knots which we sometimes see on other contemporary objects."},{"label":"Part of","value":["Asian Art GettDigital Collection"]},{"label":"Provenance","value":"The Estate of Prof. Frank Kramer"},{"label":"Genre","value":["Artifacts"]},{"label":"Object Location","value":"J.2"},{"label":"Date","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1736 - D:00 M:00 Y:1795"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"18th century CE (1736-1795 CE)"},{"label":"Era","value":["Qianlong reign","Qing dynasty"]},{"label":"Measurement","value":"Height: 8.5 cm; Width: 6.1 cm"},{"label":"Medium","value":["Ivory, silk, tortoise shell","Ivory"]},{"label":"Country of Origin","value":["China"]},{"label":"Description","value":"This object is a small mirror on one side and an ivory carving on the other. The ivory carving depicts a woman sitting in a chair while fixing her hair. A servant approaches with a vessel that may contain water. Both figures are painted in red, blue, and yellow inks. The ground line of the scene has been highlighted red and there is a blue rock in the foreground as well. A banana tree is located on the right hand side of the scene. This certainly has some symbolic meaning, most likely retirement and blissful solitude. The background of the scene contains \"openwork\" or a lattice pattern, which is thinly carved and top notch. The border of the object is made of tortoise shell which has been heated and fitted. There are gold-plated finials at the top and bottom of the object. The silk tied in Chinese knots may be original and may be fraying."},{"label":"Title","value":"Ivory carving/mirror"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
