There are two most common shapes of sword guards: the pêng and the pi (as discussed in the Ku Yü t'u)*. Personal ornamental sword guards generally belonged to the aristocrats or high ranking officers of the Imperial Court, in which restrictions regulated specific jade ornaments for each rank of nobility. This beautiful specimen of a jade sword-guard is an atypical hilt ornament with a central hole through which the metal hilt must have passed. Both sides have similar designs of a goose in full figure almost standing out from the floral surface, raising its head with a pointed beak as if it is ready to land or take off aloft the sky. Rendered on an elegant grayish stone with some dark brown inclusions, this elaborated floral design is originally developed from the motifs often found on floral bowls. The refinement of the design, the technical workmanship, and the lavish decoration on this jade openwork reflects the prosperity of the time. These personal ornaments aesthetically identify the status of the owners. However, the unrefined carving style indicates that this object may have been made for the collecting market. * in the Ku Yü t'u (\" Ancient Jades Illustrated\" by Chu Te-Jun 91294-1365).
