The top left depicts an artist in a protective outfit sketching the action of the war. This is a satiric suggestion of how to safely report amidst a dangerous battlefield. To the right of this is a drawing of a retreating row of soldiers captioned \"Virginia chivalry defending the sacred soil\", postulating the cowardice of the Southern forces in defense of the South. On the top right there is a drawing of several Confederate soldiers packed in freight boxes as a means of retreat. Alexandria is a reference to the Virginia city near Washington D.C. were the first causalities occurred in a Civil War battle. It ended with the Union capture of that locale. The center shows a \"sketch\" from a rebel artist of New York being bombarded and further commenting that the said artist had since been \"happily - shot\". To the right of this is the depiction of the battle of Sewell's Point near Norfolk, Va, commenting on the difficulty of visibility and field reporting. The bottom left depicts a photographer shooting not just a picture of a retreating soldier, but also firing a firearm. To the right of this a group of Zouaves soldiers easily press forward on the Virginian soil of \"a yielding nature\". The bottom right shows an artist asking a picket to hold fire until he can sketch him. Published in mid-June 1861, this cartoon is a good representation of the nature of the public attitude to the war at the time. It is more humorous than many publications that would appear between 1862 and 1865. It further illustrates the prevailing notion that the war would be short, portrayed here as being the result of weak Confederate resistance. As of this cartoon's publication very few causalities had resulted from the conflict and the melancholy of a protracted and costly war had not yet set in."},{"label":"Date","value":"D:15 M:06 Y:1861"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"1861-06-15"},{"label":"Title","value":"Sketches Made or Picked up by Our Eccentric Artist at the Seat of War."},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p4016coll2/id/164"}],"description":"Sketches Made or Picked up by Our Eccentric Artist at the Seat of War.","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b150dbf6-5d75-4ffb-a3f9-c177a4b633db/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Sketches Made or Picked up by Our Eccentric Artist at the Seat of War.","height":3642,"width":4582,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b150dbf6-5d75-4ffb-a3f9-c177a4b633db/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b150dbf6-5d75-4ffb-a3f9-c177a4b633db","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4,8]}]},"height":3642,"width":4582},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b150dbf6-5d75-4ffb-a3f9-c177a4b633db/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b150dbf6-5d75-4ffb-a3f9-c177a4b633db/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/b150dbf6-5d75-4ffb-a3f9-c177a4b633db/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
