His first career asperations were for law but at age twenty he was discovered acting in an amateur production. In 1883, he preformed in Madison Square Theater in May Blossom, where he met Col. John McCaull. McCaull recruited him for performances in light operas, where Hopper gained notability as both a singer and comedian. In 1891 he produced Wang, a musical comedy. In 1911, he performed in Pinafore, a production by Gilbert and Sullivan and continued to peform in opears by the duo in twelve different roles. He performed in two motion pictures in Hollywood in 1915 and for the remander of his life in productions by Gilbert and Sullivan as well as on radio.
