It may have been a copy of the Chinese powder blue glaze known as sprinkled blue (sa lan) or snowflake blue (xue hua lan) of the Ming period. After the blue glaze is blown onto the vase through a bamboo tube covered with gauze at one end, numerous tiny blue dots or snowflakes appear. The vessel's surface is then coated with a layer of transparent glaze and fired at a high temperature. The multicolored underglaze of this vase narrates a merry theme of children playing around a deer. The Japanese term karako generically refers to small Chinese children as they are portrayed in Japanese art. These children, depicted without reference to a specific sex but usually appearing to be boys, wear sets of Chinese traditional clothes and have bare heads except for two small tufts of hair. Taoist legends maintain that the deer (shika) is the only animal able to locate the sacred fungus of Immortality and lives to an exceptionally old age. In this vessel, there is nice eye contact between the deer and one of the boys. The base of the vase bears the name of the workshop where it was made."},{"label":"Title","value":"Japanese Powder-Blue Vase"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
