Though the Civil War resulted in about 620,000 deaths, many other soldiers were wounded and sent home without limbs or possessing other disabilities. As these men returned to work and society they brought shocking reminders of the war with them. Here a \"susceptible and unprotected female\" is shocked by a postmaster possessing a hook instead of a hand. Next to her is a small child; as it was felt by many that these scars of the battlefield would be traumatizing for certain elements of society, like women and children. Ironically, many women served as nurses during the Civil War in hospital where procedures such as amputations were common occurrences."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Newman, William"]},{"label":"Alternate Title","value":"Startling effect on a susceptible and unprotected female upon receiving a letter with a hook at the end of it."},{"label":"Date","value":"D:11 M:02 Y:1865"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"1865-02-11"},{"label":"Title","value":"Result of Appointing a Veteran as Postmaster"},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p4016coll2/id/216"}],"description":"Result of Appointing a Veteran as Postmaster","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/a5b46009-8aab-453f-bdb8-7c054bf9a905/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Result of Appointing a Veteran as Postmaster","height":2474,"width":2321,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/a5b46009-8aab-453f-bdb8-7c054bf9a905/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/a5b46009-8aab-453f-bdb8-7c054bf9a905","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2474,"width":2321},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/a5b46009-8aab-453f-bdb8-7c054bf9a905/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/a5b46009-8aab-453f-bdb8-7c054bf9a905/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/a5b46009-8aab-453f-bdb8-7c054bf9a905/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
