Although the soapstone surface is quite smooth and not as hard as jade, the carving style of the period is relatively stiff, which can be apparent by the lines of the back shawl (or scarf), as if it binds the back of the figure. Notice the proportion of the hands (one is bigger than the other); the upper body with the lower one; and the lotus bud with the overall figure. Simple rigid carving lines on a smooth surface give the overall piece very few details. The swirls on the robe and sleeves suggest the texture of silk fabric with a hint of a conventional pose. The hairstyle is also straight and stiff and quite typical for that time when women tied back their hair, pulling it back from their faces. Here the Bodhisattva is represented in the classic canon of female beauty. Despite the simplicity of the carving style, the facial features effectively depict the Bodhisattva's compassion and serenity. The lotus bud (unopened lotus flower), a very powerful Buddhist motif, symbolizes beings who have not achieved enlightenment. The lotus, a beautiful flower that grows out of muddy water, is a symbol of purity and cleanliness. Many Chinese paintings and sculptures will depict a goddess (usually the goddess of mercy, Guanyin) standing on this blossom.
