A man stands at the fence, observing the obelisk and several men pass by on the right. A gateway to the Sultan Ahmet Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) is in the back on the right. The obelisk was originally erected at Karnak in Egypt by Thutmose III (1479-1425 BC) and was later moved to Constantinople (Istanbul) by Roman Emperor Theodosius (379-395 AD) in the 4th century, who added the stone base. The obelisk is made of red granite and the inscriptions on the four sides comemorate the victory of Thutmose III at the Euphrades in 1450 BC. Theodosius' marble base shows scenes of the Roman emperor, his family, and court. The Hippodrome arena was constructed under Roman emperors Septimius Severus and Constantine in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. It served as a center for chariot racing, horse racing, and other entertainment for centuries.
