The tusk is of a notably large size. The armies of Ch'ien Lung were mounted and they are depicted in similar battles against Muslims by artists like Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766 AD). The battle is probably the repression of an uprising by the armies of the Qianlong Emperor in the Xinjiang Province in northwest China. Notice that all the warriors are in Chinese dress. In the middle of the scene we see a man in a human-pulled chariot, most likely carrying the Emperor with his prime minister or general beside him. They are both depicted with long beards, just like the ones on the four mounted warriors around them. There seems to be a figure bowing to the prime minister and the Emperor. This could be a Muslim or Zunghar leader in the process of surrendering. There are several stylized representations of trees in the scene. On the bottom left we see a banana tree with a pine tree above it. There is a large willow tree in the upper right portion of the scene. The triangular flag is the flag of Imperial China. Many of the warriors hold either swords or long pikes. On the back of the object there is an inscription which indicates that the piece was made during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor. \"Ch'ien Lung Nien Hao\" is inscribed on the back of the object. It is translated as \"Made during the reign of the Emperor Ch'ien Lung.\""},{"label":"Title","value":"Ivory plaque"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
