Sherman grabbing General Joseph E. Johnston as he tries to retreat across the Chattahoochee River. Though Johnston had achieved a battlefield victory at Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864, he continued to be outflanked by Sherman and was forced to retreat across the Chattahoochee. Johnston would be replaced in July by John Bell Hood prior to the Battle of Peachtree Creek. This cartoon is commenting on the assuring attitude of the Southern press in regards to Sherman's campaign against the vital city of Atlanta by drawing on the quote from the Richmond Enquirer, \"Johnston has Sherman just where he wants him.\" To the Confederacy Atlanta was an extremely important industrial and supply hub and its fall would be a major blow to the continuing war effort. With Johnston's retreat after Kennesaw, Sherman was within striking distance of Atlanta. The next engagement at Battle of Peachtree Creek would be the last of the campaign that did not take place on the outskirts of Atlanta. By mid-July Sherman had surrounded Atlanta, now a besieged city, and maneuvered into several engagements weakening and stretching the lines of the Army of Tennessee.
