Therefore, in its development, it has been closely associated with Buddhist sculpture. This is a portrait sculpture of the Japanese Buddhist monk Ikkyu Osyo at the Syuon-an Temple, a celebrated member of the sect Rinzai and one of the forty-seventh superior of the temple of Daitoku-ji at Kyoto. There are some indications of individuality in this carving and some indefinable qualities of the personality of the priest. He is bald; and the fact that he is bald shows that the piece may have been produced during a later period. From the 8th to the 14th century, reverential attachment was at times carried to such an extreme that a portrait of a celebrated priest like Ikkyu had on his head some of his own hair transplanted after his death! The figure of the monk Ikkyu Osyo has a straight body, a smiling square face (lion-jawed) with high cheekbones, and long ears wearing earrings. Long ears are some of the 32 distinctive signs of a Buddha. With a Rakusu draped over his left shoulder* and on top of a Kosode, (a general term for a kimono-type garment with huge sleeves), he also wears a pair of Kyahan, gaiters or leggings as a traveling accessory. He carries in his right hand a scroll of sutra (a symbol of wisdom) and a fly-whisk in his left hand (a symbol of the monks' religious function or to wave away the flies which, according to the tenets of their creed, they may not kill). He sits on a stone stool. Another distinctive feature of Japanese small figurines is their circular stands. *Rakusu is a sort of mini-kesa used when traveling; Kesa is an official garment signifying ordination and dharma transmission from a master to a disciple."},{"label":"Title","value":"Okimono ivory carving"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
