Satsuma is the name of an ancient Japanese province which lies in the southernmost part of the island of Kyushu, Japan. It has become well known among collectors of Japanese ceramics because of the earthenware made there from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Satsuma pottery is known for its cream-colored body that is glazed in a clear but slightly yellowish color and finely crackled into a delicate network. Such a technique was developed during the 18th century. Until the end of the 18th century most Satsuma pottery was simple and plainly decorated. They were primarily used in the traditional tea ceremony. \"Today, however, the name Satsuma is more readily identified with the highly elaborate examples from the late 19th and 20th centuries, where painstakingly detailed enamel decoration covers the surface.\" (p.6, Louis Lawrence, Satsuma: Masterpieces from the World's Important Collections. London: Dauphin Publishing Limited, 1991) This small Satsuma koro is finely crackled and exquisitely decorated. The cover has a gilt lobed knob with molded chrysanthemum petal designs. The outer sides of the cover body are decorated with three evenly spaced applied leaves against a background of chrysanthemums and coiling vines. Between every two applied leaves is an irregular '8'-shaped opening with gilt borders. The exterior of the body is adorned with four registers of gilt designs. The first register on top of the neck has three regularly spaced heart-shaped medallions of floral patterns. Below this is a band of zigzag patterns against a background of oblique lines, followed by another band of leafy patterns. The fourth and main register is framed by coiling vine patterns on top and lozenge patterns with floral designs inside on the bottom. It depicts three medallions of landscape and theatrical scenes, alternated with three roundels, each of which represents two facing birds perching on bamboos together with gilt floral designs and supplemental lei wen 雷紋 (thunder pattern) patterns. Outside of these medallions are chrysanthemums against a background of coiling vines. On the exterior of each foot there is a gilt flower design. The bottom of the three feet is unglazed, exposing the cream-colored body. The interior of the cover and the koro itself is glazed in a yellowish white and plainly decorated. The inner walls of the sided lips are ornamented with three evenly spaced gilt floral scrolls."},{"label":"Title","value":"Small Satsuma three-footed incense burner (koro)"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
