The building was constructed under Ottoman Emperor Sultan Suleiman I by the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan from 1550-1557. The structure was designed in Byzantine style influenced by the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, and is considered to be one of the greatest works of both Süleyman and Sinan . The mosque was designed with four minarets, stained glass windows, a large central dome, two semi domes, and a number of smaller domes. The building also incorporates a large interior courtyard, and a garden (visible in the lower right corner of the image) where the tombs of Süleyman and his wife are located. It is part of a large complex (Süleymaniye Külliyesi) that included medical facilities schools, shops, coffee houses, and soup kitchen.
