The combined terms Feng (male) and Huang (female) explains the derivation of its name. Each long-legged phoenix (Feng-Huang in Chinese) with trailing tail feathers stands on a stylized cloudwork and floral wood stand. It lifts its head with a crest and a pointed beak upwards. A divine bird, the phoenix is the product of the Sun, the great Yang principle, the essence of water, emblem of purity, and an omen of prosperity and harmony. One of the legendary supernatural creatures, the magic bird, with its extravagant plumage that hides in the far northern caves, has seldom been seen during China's constant war times; it is therefore the symbol of peace.* According to the oldest known Chinese writings, the Annals of the Bamboo Books and Confucian Analects, the bird was first mentioned in the reign of Huang-ti (2697-2597 B.C.)** In the Forbidden City of Peiking, the phoenix design is emblematic of the Empress, while the dragon the Emperor. The use of the Feng-Huang motif in jade dates back to the Shang Yin period and also on girdle ornaments of the Zhou and Han periods. Its graceful form and coloring feathers have been a constant source of inspiration and a favorite subject for Chinese artists. During the Qing period, life-like pairs of the mythological phoenix statuettes were elegantly represented among clouds, with Guanyin and other Immortals. * According to Chinese legend, the four supernatural creatures heading the four different divisions of the animal world are the dragon, the unicorn, the phoenix and the tortoise. ** Chuh-Shu-Ki, Annal of the Bamboo Books. A collection of ancient documents contains China primordial legends and myths, found 279 A.D.
