Before beginning his literary career Miller was a gold miner in both California and Oregon, a lawyer and evetually a judge, as well as the founder of a newspaper in Canyon City, Oregon. In 1868 he published his first book of poetry, Specimens. After limited literary success in America he moved to London where he enjoyed some fame initially; however in 1879 Miller returne to New York City to pursue a theatre career.
