The amulet consists of two identical split pieces to form a profile of a crouching-tiger with Chinese characters on the surface of each side. The letter hu on the left side confirms the identity of the animal. On the left flank of the animal, there is the name of the workshop. When matching the two split sides together, the object is hollow. Along the spine of the animal are small incised characters indicating the auspiciousness of the tiger. The creature is very compressed with its elongated body and crawling legs. Its tail coils upward. A fine, long narrow snout suggests a closed jaw. The crawling gesture suggests that the tiger is preying on something. This object may have been more than just another decorative object. It may have meant more to the owner than just the image of a single creature. This carving probably functions as an amulet to be placed on tables or carried as 'handling' pieces. The surface has a simulated patina that looks brassy and shiny and does not cover the spaces where there are characters. The overall shape and design indicate that the piece is not an antique object, but an imitation of an early style."},{"label":"Title","value":"Iron tiger amulet"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
