The Buddhist lion is emblematic of power, energy and valor. The exterior of the lid is decorated with two evenly spaced panels of shuang long xi zhu wen (two-dragons-fighting-over-a-pearl design) against a pierced background. The dragons here are represented in a simplified fashion. The body of the incense burner is adorned with two applied monster heads on both ends. Each side of the body depicts a large panel of embossed peony sprays against an incised ringmatted background. The shuang long xi zhu wen first appeared on Yue ware vessels of the Five Dynasties (907-960) and is often seen on Ming and Qing official wares. It is usually emblematic of good fortune and a good harvest year. The peony, known as fu gui hua (the flower of wealth and rank), conveys a wish for official rank in the emperor's civil service as well as a salary and perquisites to ensure wealth. The outside of the base is plainly decorated. The interior of the lid and the incense burner are coarsely made and undecorated. On the bottom of the base there is a raised reign mark in seal script reading \"xuan de nian zhi (Made during the Xuande Reign [of the Ming dynasty]; 1426-1435)\". The genuine Xuande mark is always in six characters, namely \"da ming xuan de nian zhi (Made during the Xuande Reign of the Great Ming). The four character Xuande mark frequently appears on later copies. Further, the genuine Xuande bronze incense burner is prestigious for its elegant antique shape and superb grade of workmanship. The genuine vessels are rarely seen at present and thus they are exceedingly prized. However, the shape and decorations of this incense burner are rigid, excessive and quite offhand. Therefore, this piece is evidently just a recent replica, produced during the late 19th century to mid-20th century."},{"label":"Title","value":"Incense burner with a lid"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
