The bowl is divided in four sides (sometimes as many as ten sides), and decorated with the four popular Chinese floral motives of bamboo, orchid, plum, and peony on a white underglaze. Floral elements were not a dominant design in Chinese art until the Song dynasty when the full efflorescence of the floral motives began to appear. This period began a harmonious synchronization between arts and poetry in which the beauties of flowers and foliages prevailed. From the Song to the Qing dynasty, floral designs overwhelmed Chinese art. The wash colors on this bowl can be classified as \"new colors\" or xin cai, also known as foreign colors or new decoration (xin hu), referring to a decorative method introduced to China from Western art in recent times. The palette has contrasting and excessively bright multi-colors with additional shades by blending the main colors. The flowers are painted directly onto the bowl in a watercolor wash without being outlined first. The black outlines were added as the final step. The colors of the floral design were applied so heavily that they stand out like gems. This type of new colors is widely used in recent daily utensils. Copies of Ming original bowls were made in the Qing dynasty, with a great profusion of floral elements. The style and floral decoration of this bowl do not match with those of the Ming or the Qing porcelain. When running a finger around the footring, one can actually feel its smoothness. Usually footrings of old wares are sandy and rough. The disjointed blue mark on the bottom of the bowl, written as \"the Great Qing Dynasty, the reign of Chenghua Emperor\" (Ta Qing Chenghua nien-hao), justifies the above remark that this is indeed an imitation of the Ming Chenghua ware.* *The fact that this is an odd mishmash of words and the inconsistency of the mark (the dynasty period does not match the Emperor's reign name) combined with the oversize, the stylistic value, the tones of the colors, and the quality of the drawing lines signifies that this is an imitation of substandard value. During the late Qing dynasty, exportation of porcelain greatly expanded, and was often gaudily decorated to cover up the defective body. Forgeries and imitations have been so numerous that the date marks cannot be accepted as proof of age. The immense quantity of china that appeared in Europe was marked \"Chenghua.\" This bowl may have been produced in a recent time when large quantities of carvings were made to meet with public and private collections' demands. The new mechanical age yields a vulgar style brought about by a trend of producing art as a commodity."},{"label":"Title","value":"Large multi-facetted bowl"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
