He was a proponent of a single tax on land. His economic ideas had an influence on the Progressive Era in America. In 1879 he published Progress and Property, which became an international best seller. In 1881, George became internationally known, when he was sent to England and Ireland to investigate the countries' political conditions. He later traveled throughout Europe and Austrailia lecturing.
