At the foot of the vase, a running deer with his head turned up, looks backward over his shoulders, and is gazing at a bird. In front of him is a large prunus tree carved in open work. The carefully worked deer and prunus tree, embellished with incised lines, show, in great detail, the deer muscles and the prunus' twisted tree trunk. The right eye and the antlers are shown as incised lines. Both the deer and the bird are lively engraved in high relief. Such dynamic running movement and the backward glance of the figure characterize typical designs from Western Asia. Contact with the steppe areas may also have inspired this scene. Due to the belief that deer live to a great age, they have become a symbol of longevity. Because it was also believed to be the only animal able to find the sacred fungus of immortality, lingzhi, the deer became a very popular subject. The motif of a deer with a bird forms the rebus juelu fenghou, which can be read as \"may you receive high rank and profit.\" Because of the vase's small size and lack of cover, it may have served as a gift."},{"label":"Title","value":"Small vase"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
