The cover has a flower bud-shaped knob, the upper part of which is gilt. Its body is decorated with floral designs and man cao wen (coiling vine and leaf design) on a yellow background. Its inside is glazed in white. The exterior of the jar itself is adorned with three registers of decorations, separated by black 'bowstring' circles. The first register on top is a band of continuous wave patterns on a green background. The following and main register consists of four evenly spaced medallions, each of which depicts a red shuang xi character (double happiness) enclosed by two pink bats on a yellow background. Peony sprays in pinkish-red and light purple, light blue plum blossoms, and light blue man cao wen surround the medallions. The bottom has a band of connected floral petals in light green. The base of the footring is in a light green glaze without any decoration or inscription. The bottom rim of the footring and the interior of this jar are unglazed, exposing the buff body. Evidently, this covered jar may have served as a wedding gift according to the iconography of its designs. The shuang xi character is commonly used in the wedding celebration. The bat is a pun for the word fu meaning 'good fortune and blessings'. The peony, known as fu gui hua (the flower of wealth and rank), conveys a wish for official rank in the emperor's civil service, as well as a salary and perquisites to ensure wealth. The plum blossom, one of the sui han san you (Three Friends of Winter, namely pine, bamboo and plum, which still keep their integrity when all other plants wither and their leaves fall), is important to the Chinese as a symbol of longevity and good fortune. Evidently, this jar demonstrates a fair grade of workmanship. Consequently, this piece may have been made during the late Qing period or even later, approximately from late 19th century to the early 20th century."},{"label":"Title","value":"Neckless covered jar"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
