Stanton, Secretary of War and General Henry Halleck, general-in-chief of the US armies visiting Lincoln following the horrible defeat at Fredericksburg in December 1862. Lincoln's servant is signaling to him that \"them Gilliteens has 'arove' \", effectively calling both Stanton and Halleck butchers for the disaster of Fredericksburg. Both appear very nervous as Lincoln contemplatively sits with his hands together. Lincoln asks them to \"step out in the Back Yard\" inferring that their time of service has come to an end. However, Halleck retained his position until March 1864 and Stanton remained as Secretary of War till 1868. Despite not losing their positions, both men received harsh criticism for Union failures during the early years of the war."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Bellew, Frank"]},{"label":"Alternate Title","value":"Servant. \"If ye plase, Sir, them Gillteens has arove.\" Mr. Lincoln. \"All right, Michael --- Now, Gentlemen, will you be kind enough to step out into the back yard?\""},{"label":"Date","value":"D:03 M:01 Y:1863"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"1863-01-03"},{"label":"Title","value":"Those Guillotines - A Little Incident at the White House"},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p4016coll2/id/211"}],"description":"Those Guillotines - A Little Incident at the White House","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/8908716b-7df8-4954-8e75-a31c92e9e757/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Those Guillotines - A Little Incident at the White House","height":2517,"width":2320,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/8908716b-7df8-4954-8e75-a31c92e9e757/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/8908716b-7df8-4954-8e75-a31c92e9e757","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2517,"width":2320},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/8908716b-7df8-4954-8e75-a31c92e9e757/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/8908716b-7df8-4954-8e75-a31c92e9e757/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/8908716b-7df8-4954-8e75-a31c92e9e757/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
