This stained ivory carving portrays the famous monk Shuho Myocho (or Daito Kokushi, 1282-1337), founder of the Daitoku-ji Zen temple, one of the five temples in Kyoto known as the gozan, controlled by the shogunate. He is carrying a tea set while looking at a monkey squatting by his side. The minute details of the facial expressions, the interaction between the monk and the monkey, as well as the monk's robe are exceptionally refined. In Buddhism, the monkey symbolizes the hyperactive mind or the restless mind that bounces from one place to the other. The Theravada tradition calls this phenomenon 'monkey mind'. It prevents the Zen practitioner from mindfulness and concentration. Shuho Myocho lived among the beggars at the Fifth Street Bridge in Kyoto during the of the Kamakura period (1185-1392). The Emperor wanted Daito to preach at the court, but the monk had rejected the worldly honors and preferred an anonymous life of poverty. He is famous for his metaphor suggesting that 'to be quiet within the hubbub of this world was like being cool in a fire.' Besides Zen practices of medicine and poetry, the tea ceremony was one of the crucial goals to attain inner tranquility, even in the bustle of a big city. It begins with a fire but has the effect of calming the spirit. To be invited to a small tea gathering by a distinguished monk such as Shuho was a cultural badge of honor. The tea gathering brought together the elite for informal discussions that might not take place under other circumstances. The Japanese term for a small decorative sculpture like this carving is okimono. The subject of this type of sculpture tends toward more human-oriented facets of everyday life. The hilarious touch of the monkey handing a pair of glasses to the monk helps confirm that this object may have been a recent item for the enthusiastic collectors of Japanese decorative art."},{"label":"Title","value":"Okimono ivory carving of the famous Japanese monk Shuho Myocho"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
