This is a special kind of jade which has not been found in situ since Han days. Evidently the supply must have been limited and worked up before the Han dynasty closed. Pi is the name of this design. It represents Heaven and was used in ritualistic ceremonies. This one was bought of Cole Galleries, NY City. Mr. Gutman made me a price of $4.00 on this which I consider very reasonable. The fine incised scales, enclosing stippling and fine striations give the piece a mystic allure. According to Chinese legend, the dragon is accredited with the power of transformation. Its obscure charcoal color is daintily accentuated with some light intrusions of warm orange and an unusually small section of off-white on one side. The charm of this carving is accentuated by an elegant floral design stand. The earliest records of dragon carvings in jade appeared on girdle ornaments (and were therefore attributed to the Chou period). This object was probably a personal ornament or charm."},{"label":"Title","value":"P'i Ring, Emblem of heaven"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
