A bird with long tails is a symbol for longevity. The swallow (yan), a sign of spring, is a symbol of happiness and a successful future. The peony symbolizes late spring or early summer, the prunus (plum) blossom symbolizes long life, and the prunus tree symbolizes happiness. Similar to the process of making cameo glass, this bowl was created by dipping a basic form in layers of white and red glass.
