Southern planters tried to keep slaves in check during the Civil War by proclaiming that the Union would exact worse fates upon them, such as sending them to Cuba. This depiction is presenting that this guise was seldom believed by slaves themselves. Here the terrified planter is inquiring about the arrival of Yankee ships while two slaves stand by the door defiantly. They are feigning ignorance as a way of expressing their insubordination. The image of a scared slave owner and confident slaves illustrates the effect that the war could and would having on the classical hierarchy of Southern plantations.
