The Romans destroyed the building in 70 AD. Although it was never rebuilt, part of the structure became the Western Wall (or Wailing Wall), a place of prayer and pilgrimage for Jews. *Conrad Schick (1822-1901) was a German-born architect, missionary, and archaeologist who spent most of his life in Jerusalem. Schick built a number of detailed models of historical and religious sites in the city.
