His arms are crossed with hands in sleeves and he wears a belt at the waist. The piece shows some cracks and much of the glaze is worn off. The practice of burying pottery or wooden figures and objects (known as ming-ch'i or mingqi) with which the dead were familiar in life began very early in China. Tang mingqi, or spirit objects, frequently took the form of musicians, dancers, and servants in clay, but were often ornamented with sancai, or three-color, glaze.
