Bernhardt studied at the Paris Conservatoire and began her career in 1862. In her early career she preformed with the French acting group Comédie Française but broke away from the group in 1880. After breaking from the group she became one of the most acclaimed actresses of her day performing in French throughout Europe and in New York. She lead an equally eccentric private life, surrounding herself with all types of extravagences. She married twice but was also romantically linked to the Prince of Wales. Bernhardt was also a pioneer in film acting which she began in 1900. She died of Uremia on March 26, 1923 and is buried in the famous Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
