It consists of a bowl or cup and a tall foot. Its dark crimson-brown background is finely adorned with striations of clouds on top and tiles of chrysanthemum representing the ground. The exquisite and delicate details of the whole design are intricately carved in raised relief depicting an imperial garden nestled in an exquisite mountain range. The narrative scene occupies the whole surface of the cup, depicting a scene in which a high ranking court Official is having a conversation with others in a beautiful pavilion partially covered by an aged cypress tree. Carrying a message from the battlefront, a general steps down from horseback and rushes to the garden gate. He is greeted by two attendants who are ready to lead him to the Official. The bottom of the piece is carved with stylized motives of clouds and chrysanthemums that echo in the register on the stem of the cup; the other with the meander or key-fret pattern. The stand of the cup is beautifully carved in stylized lotus petals. Based on the quality of lacquer craft and the carving style of this cup, it can be fairly dated of the late Qing period or later when lacquer wares were nourished by expanded patronage and technical mastery. Lacquer originated during the Shang period and reappeared after each period in a fresh guise which raises problems when dating the marked and unmarked pieces. These problems are further complicated by the existence of later pieces bearing fictitious earlier dates."},{"label":"Title","value":"Lacquer stem-cup on a lotus stand"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
