It consists of a geometric key motif that goes around the top of the bowl. The key design is also known as the cloud and thunder motif. The interior of the bowl is black and the exterior was originally a red lacquer. This object may have some age, but the date is unknown. The plain design may suggest that this was a Buddhist alms-bowl. These date back to the 9th century AD. There is a great example of an alms-bowl from the Song Dynasty in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts which is lacquered completely black. The plain design and lack of a lip on the bowl could suggest similarity between the two objects.
