The exterior is primarily adorned with two medallions of theatrical scenes against an incised imperial yellow background of sacred lotus sprays and man cao wen (coiling vine and leaf design). The lotus is a symbol of purity and integrity. It is also one of the eight precious Buddhist things. The lotus comes out of the mud but remains itself unstained. It is inwardly empty yet outwardly upright. It has no branches (no family/offspring) yet smells sweet. The two medallions on both sides of the bowl depict a young mother teaching her son. Both figures wear Ming-style costumes. The mother appears attractive, with her hair arranged in a pompadour, into which hair ornaments have been thrust on either side. One medallion represents the mother sitting on a large flat-topped rock, on which there is a red case of books. She is shown pointing the index finger of her left hand towards her son, who is standing before her in front of a flat bench, as she tries to teach him. The right hand of her son is extended as if declaiming while his left hand is clutching a book. Behind them is a corner of a house showing part of a window, through which can be seen a corner of a room with one wall marked off in red squares on a white background. The other medallion on the opposite side illustrates the mother seated at a table with a green cloth on it. Her finger is pointing at a book, next to which is a rose water pot. Her son is standing attentively at the end of the table. To the right of the mother is a brownish table, on which there is a brownish incense burner with smoke ascending from it. On the floor, in front of the table is a rose-colored covered jar with a blue rim. The open window gives a view of the garden. Both the interior and the base of the footring are glazed in turquoise blue. The rim of the footring is unglazed. On the base of the footring there is a red stamp \"HONG KONG\". It is obvious that the original mark was erased and then replaced by this stamp 'to fool the customs officials'. According to the description written by Dr. Chaoming Chen who sold this object to Dr. Kramer, the original mark was probably a six-character \"da qing jia qing nian zhi\" (Made during the Jiaqing Reign of the Great Qing) as he claimed that the turquoise blue interior was typical of the Jiaqing period (1796-1820). Dr. Chen's statement is plausible. As a matter of fact, bowls with roundels of decoration against incised colored backgrounds covered with floral motifs are a distinctive Daoguang type. Therefore, the earliest possible dating of this large imperial yellow bowl should be the Daoguang period (1821-1850). The original mark is probably a six-character \"da qing dao guang nian zhi\" (Made during the Daoguang Reign of the Great Qing)."},{"label":"Title","value":"Large, deep bowl with medallions of theatrical scenes"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
