This was marked K'ang Hsi Period but is probably Ming. He said it is a very valuable piece and to hold on to it. $125 would not be exorbitant for it. These amber pieces are scarce. This is one of the best pieces of amber in the city. In taking off the label, I noticed that some of the amber stuck to the glue."},{"label":"Genre","value":["Artifacts"]},{"label":"Object Location","value":"11.E.5"},{"label":"Date","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1661 - D:00 M:00 Y:1722"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"1661-1722 CE"},{"label":"Era","value":["Kangxi reign","Qing dynasty"]},{"label":"Measurement","value":"Height: 5.25 cm; Width: 8.5 cm"},{"label":"Medium","value":["Amber","Other stones"]},{"label":"Country of Origin","value":["China"]},{"label":"Description","value":"Deep reddish brown amber carved in the shape of a mountain and depicts a Qilin, a Phoenix, and a group of books tied together. According to Chinese lore, amber, or hu po, came from the soul of a deceased tiger that descended to earth. The tiger is a symbol of dignity, ferocity, courage, and is associated with the military. The Qilin, one of the four great mythical beasts, is a symbol for a first level military officer. The Phoenix, which symbolizes the sun, good luck, abundance, and longevity, also symbolizes the human qualities of virtue, duty, humanity and reliability. The books, are one of the symbols of the scholar. Mountains were also imbued since ancient times with sacred power as manifestations of nature's vital energy (qi). One can pull these elements into a rebus as a wish for a student to pass his examinations and achieve high office."},{"label":"Title","value":"Carved Amber Mountain"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
