The exterior of this vessel is decorated with five registers of design which are mostly in relief. The first register along the border of the dish-shaped mouth is a band of carved hui wen (key fret patterns). Below this are conceptual animal motifs in relief on the neck, followed by three raised bowstring designs. The subsequent three registers of design are separated by raised bowstring patterns. First comes two large, partially gilt (now almost all worn off) stylized but realistic ox masks on both sides of the body against a background full of embossed key fret patterns. Underneath this are a group of partially gilt (now almost all worn off) stylized taotie designs (animal mask designs) against an incised key fret pattern background. The last register on the exterior of the foot depicts a band of conceptual dragon designs against a background with the same decoration. The interior and the base of the foot are plainly decorated. The latter is covered with patina, but evidently it is later addition. Originally the collector Mr. John H. Hampshire dated this cast iron ritual wine vessel to the Han dynasty; however, it seems that the shape does not match with any dated Han pieces. Further, the decorative style on this piece is not of Han, either. According to a book titled gu wan zhi nan (Guide of Chinese Antiques) written in 1942 by Zhao Ruzhen, a prestigious connoisseur, Qin and Han bronze (cast iron) pieces seldom bear decorations; if they are decorated, designs on them appear coarse and in low relief. But as to this cast iron vessel, its decorations seem refined and in relatively high relief. Moreover, as mentioned above, the base of the foot is covered with a later addition of patina. Therefore, it is highly likely that this cast iron piece is a recent copy."},{"label":"Title","value":"Ritual wine vessel"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
