He is credited with transforming the British Army into a modern fight force. He joined the British Army at the age of eighteen and was sent to India. While serving in the army he frequently placed himself in danger with the goal of showing his bravery to receive promotions. He was wounded repeatedly and narrowly escaped death but was also appointed Captain at 21 because of this philosophy. He served as Captain and for amusement Sharpshooter in the Crimean War. He served in China in 1860 where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. During the American Civil War he was stationed in Canada preparing for possible war with the Union Army. While there he traveled throughout the South and met with General Robert E. Lee. He returned to England and was sent to West Africa in 1873 to fight the Ashanti. He was then sent to Egypt to fight against Ahmed Arabi, and later to rescue General Charles G. Gordon in Sudan. In 1890 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief for Ireland and later for the British Army. Known as a soldier, Wolseley was also a writer of mostly military books, such as The Soldier's Pocketbook for Field Service and The Story of a Soldier's Life. In his later years he wrote his autobiography. He suffered from Alzheimers and died in 1913."},{"label":"Creator","value":["London Stereoscopic Company, London"]},{"label":"Title","value":"Wolseley, Lord Garnet"},{"label":"Part of","value":["Nineteenth Century Notables GettDigital Collection"]},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p126301coll1/id/31"}],"description":"Wolseley, Lord Garnet","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/5d90f397-2c94-4356-9f15-c7d44519c6bb/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Wolseley, Lord Garnet","height":1940,"width":1264,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/5d90f397-2c94-4356-9f15-c7d44519c6bb/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/5d90f397-2c94-4356-9f15-c7d44519c6bb","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1940,"width":1264},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/5d90f397-2c94-4356-9f15-c7d44519c6bb/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/5d90f397-2c94-4356-9f15-c7d44519c6bb/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/5d90f397-2c94-4356-9f15-c7d44519c6bb/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
