It is used to decipher the inner meanings of motifs that are in most cases auspicious, and to reveal outside cultural and religious influences and contributions. Buddhism had been imported from India at the beginning of the millennium. By the mid-Han period, Buddhist religious motifs gradually influenced and altered the meanings and forms of all Taoist symbols in Chinese art. Ornamental jade carvings started to carry a variety of Buddhist symbols or a unique combination of both Taoist and Buddhist motifs. The special values, color, and luminosity of jade made it a suitable material with which to refer to religious subjects. From the mid Ming to late Qing dynasty, the plethora of personal and exclusive jade ornaments played various roles and conveyed precise messages. It contributed to the definition of the person's identity in terms of belief, gender, age, social status, aesthetic considerations, and even his wishes.
