At fourteen she left school to pursue an acting career, encouraged by her step father she studied acting in New York City. In 1875, at the age of sixteen, she debuted in Louisville, KY. From that point on she acted in tours throughout the United States and made her debut performance in London in 1883. In 1890 after retiring from the stage, she married Antonio F. Navarro, a lawyer who practiced in New York and London. They had a daughter, Elena and son, Jose.
