Most sculptures are highly stylized. The simplicity and hardship of everyday life is well expressed in the art of okimono, a Japanese term for small decorative sculptures, mostly in ivory. This fine carving depicts a man carrying a child on his back. Based on the facial features, one can easily say that this is a carving of a grandfather with his grandchild. There is a great amount of emotional expressions in the gestures of the poses, the smiling faces, the hands, and most of all the lively movements. The exquisite details as well as the style are realistically executed with grace and simple carving lines. His right hand and a basket of fruit are broken off. He turns his head to his left to smile at the little chubby face boy on his back. The boy holds a large bamboo basket to cover the old man's head or just to play with him. Both smile happily. They wear everyday traditional garments, the yukata, with geometric and floral designs and a short sash tied at the waist. The yukata is an informal summer garment also worn by men, women, and children in Japan. The old man also wears a Zori*. In general, figure carvings are not static portraits. Almost without exception, a human figure is portrayed doing something such as a parent expressing devotion to his or her children, or adults to the very young. These subjects have provided an unending stream of inspiration for okimono artists throughout the years. Japanese ivory figure carvings frequently have a flat and thin ivory stand. * Japanese footwear consists of Zori, a thin or thick-soled sandal with a V-shaped thong which comes between the big toe and the rest of the foot and so keeps the sandal in place. The wooden sandal with raised strips across the sole is called Geta. Japanese footwear has been designed so that it is easy to slip off, as is necessary in the country where it is customary to remove footwear before entering a house."},{"label":"Title","value":"Okimono ivory carving"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
